Sending Responses Via Instant Messenger

So you’ve made your Instant Messenger work to post and receive Plurks. Now what if you wanted to send a response?

Easy.

1. Just look at the link at the end of every plurk posted to you by bot@plurk.com:

bot: bakla says Today is yet another day when I say hello and goodbye to my paycheck. sigh http://plurk.com/p/7dr8z - #7dr8z

2. Take note of the of the non-underlined characters at the end of the chat message, after the link to that particular plurk: #7dr8z. These alphanumeric characters are the same as the characters trailing the last slash of the URL.

3. To send a response to that particular Plurk, simply copy those last few characters and type your response after it:

#7dr8z (space) oh well, papel

4. Hit enter, and then you’ll get a response from bot@plurk.com:

5. Check your Plurk timeline and see that your response has indeed been posted!

Plurk via Instant Messenger!

Plurk has brought back the Instant Messenger (IM) feature!

You can now update your plurk page via your Instant Messenger service! Currently though, only IM accounts using the Google/Jabber platform are working (unlike what is displyed on the IM Page). Also, there may still be some issues with Google Apps-powered GTalk chat accounts.

Here are the steps to activating your Plurk via IM:
1. On your Plurk Page, click on MY Account (or visit this link: www.plurk.com/IM/showIM).

2. The window below will pop-up

3. Fill-in the IM field with your IM id (for Google Talk users, type in full email address).

4. On the SERVICE field, you will notice that only one drop-down option is available: Google/Jabber. Select that and hit Sign Up.

5. You will then get either an error message saying that the plurk bots are over-staffed and busy because of too many requests, or this message:

6. Add bot@plurk.com to your Contacts list on GTalk. Actually, You have to invite bot@plurk.com to Chat. Once you get bot@plurk.com added, you will receive this notice on your Plurk My Account Page:

7. And see this notice on your GTalk chat session with bot@plurk.com:

8. Type your Plurk user name to activate Plurk via Gtalk!
You will receive this message:

bot: Your IM is now activated! Type HELP to get short guide how to use me.

9. Congratulations! You may now start using Plurk via GTalk!

These are the commands that you can use:

Silent: off

So if youre tired of receiving updates, just type “off”. If you want it back on, simply type “on”

If you do not want to follow updates of certain “friends” from your timeline on your IM, you can do that by clicking on My Friends. The window below will appear:

Just click on the button under the IM Follow and it changes automatically from On to Off or from Off to On (whichever is applicable).

(In case you didn’t notice, this is also where you can unfollow annoying people and remove them from your timeline instead of removing them as friends - removing them as friends will give you the later suffering from severe awkwardness when you want to follow them again).

Some Tips on Maintaining Your Plurk Karma

For many of us, Plurk is like a high-maintenance girlfriend who needs all the attention in the world. Well, at least for those who care about their Karma scores. I’m sure you have waited for that time of the day when your Karma, when your fate is delivered to you on Plurk.

You would sometimes see people getting annoyed and frustrated because their Karma score went down. Enter this icon:

I am not quite familiar about the technicalities of the computation of Karma increase/decrease, but I will give you some tips on how to maintain your Karma score based on my own experience. As you can see from the table below, my Karma score is going on an upward trend - even if I have not been plurking that much in the past couple of weeks.

Of course, I assume that you have read the Safe Plurking Habits guide on Plurk. If you haven’t then you should. So here are my tips on maintaining your Karma scores and avoid that sorry feeling of seeing your Plurk girlfriend hit you with a decrease in score:

Be mindful of the Plurk Intervals. The Plurk Karma score updates six times in a 24-hour day. These updates are scheduled in 4-hour intervals: 12:00 AM, 4:00AM, 8:00AM, 12:00PM, 4:00PM, 8:00PM (US Pacific Time, US Eastern Time, and Manila Time). These update schedules may change though when the US switches back to Standard time in November (the scheduled updates above are on DST).
Plurk at least once per interval. You should post at least one Plurk per interval. This will assure you that your Karma will not decrease. However, the increase may not be your usual increase rate if you do not do the next item.
Post a reply to any plurk (even your own) at least once per interval. This will assure you that the increment on your score is your regular increase rate.
Recent updates by the A-Team have proven (at least to me) that you can actually miss one interval (no plurks and no responses) and not have a decrease in your score. Sadly though, the Karma score will also not increase. Your Karma update will just be +0.00. Thanks to the A-Team who realized that we also need to sleep and live a life outside the Internet.
Your Plurk posts must at least have one response from your Plurker friends or fans (or those who are not your friends or fans yet).
Do not reply with icons all the time. There are some people who just reply to all Plurk posts with icons. While this is fun (for them) and while this may not really affect their scores directly, these people may be in trouble. Why? Because if the person whom you post “icon replies” to gets annoyed at these replies, they may block you or remove you from their list, and that may cause a decrease in your score.
Invite people to join Plurk. Everytime a person you invited signs up, a significant amount of score is added to at least one interval increase for you.
Mobile Plurking. We are not in front of the computer 24 hours a day, seven days a week (or are we?), and there are times when we can’t post Plurks and responses right? Thanks to mobile technology, you can post at least one Plurk and one response per interval.

On your mobile phones, you can access Plurk via GPRS, 3G or WLAN at http://plurk.com/m and enjoy Plurking there.

For users in the Philippines, you can subscribe to PhPlurk.com and add them to your friends list for you to be able to send mobile updates even if you are away from the computer or even if you are using a Nokia 5110 (no 3G, no WLAN, no GPRS).

To post a Plurk, type in: PLURK (space) your plurk and send it to your mobile carrier gateway (read more on PhPlurk.com).

To post a reply (to your own Plurk only, and only to the last Plurk you posted), type in: RPLURK (space) your message and send to your mobile carrier gateway.

These are just some of the things that helped my score hike up without a hitch and these are based on my own Personal Plurkperience. If you have other tips you would like to share with everyone else, please feel free to do so.
